QUARTER MILE AND THEN SOME
PAPERBACK
PAPERBACK
On May 9th 2002 author Jon Saxon landed at New York's JFK, with a small rucksack, his second-hand Pentax camera and $480, to be greeted by Sakis Hadjiminas' rally team, Eurosport Manhattan Rallying.
Thanks to their hospitality, along with another North America VW rally legend, Tim O'Neil, Jon would go on to piggy-back that year's rally calendar by day – allowing him to meet up with owners of modified Volkswagens in the evening, and by early morning seeking 10-second street cars.
Across the country differences were soon explored, travel plans broken, intimate moments shared, and friendships – as close as is possible when on the road – made.
Quarter Mile and Then Some is so much more than cars, motorsport and counter culture, as Jon got to truly see the very best this country had to offer – its people, and along with it, their openness and drive.

QUARTER MILE AND THEN SOME
MAGAZINE
2002
From as early as September, Quarter Mile diary entires begin mentioning a potential Volkswagen magazine for the North America market. This quickly results in media kit distribution under the Volkswagen Tuner banner, staff potentials being contacted, and an ambitious project car (in the shape of a beige four-door Rabbit full of wasps and mice) and a 1982 two-door Jetta donor (with a boot-full of someone’s belongings, included some inappropriate negatives) being secured.
The magazine was later scheduled to be printed at Solisco in Québec under the new name of VW Style, with many of the ads sold in principle at the GTI-Treffen event in Austria to European companies wishing to solicit North America distribution. Shortly after, the publishing editor was installed as Editor-in-Chief for one of evo magazine’s overseas licences which saw the ’temporary’ pause of VW Style.
2025
The original issue 1 has been dusted down and edited. Beyond the inclusion of two 2008 features and a slight name change to VW Type, the content is true to the 2002 flat-plan. A 210x265mm format and a 170x229mm compact version have since been short-run printed: both are available to view by anyone wishing to partner on this fun historic media project.
